Eyes in the Digital Era: Combating Strain and Discomfort 

 

 

The digital world has a significant impact on the inhabitants of modern society. It has jeopardized human health and affected most of the organs of the body. Topping the list is the human eyes. Our eyes have been enduring extreme strains or discomfort due to exposure to computers or smartphones for a longer time span. In medical terms, the phenomenon is also called Computer Vision syndrome. Continuously sitting and working in front of the computer can be quite taxing. It leads to different health issues, including eyesight problems. With the proliferation of digitalization, some professions demand that we sit and work in front of the computer for around 9-10 hours a day. The increasing strain on the eyes and nerves has a long-lasting effect on eye health. Whether at home or office, it is crucial to take adequate care of the eyes, no matter how demanding your job gets. Hence, it is essential to follow certain habits that will minimize the risks of eye problems.

Some essential habits to take care of our eyes at the workplace are- 

 

 

Importance of a well-lit working space 

Strains on the eyes can occur due to excessive light falling on your eyes. Excessive sunlight coming from the windows or the bright lights in the interiors can cause considerable damage to eyesight. Adjust the sunlight by putting curtains or blinds in the windows, while changes or alterations in the interior lights can effectively reduce the problems. 

 

Practice 20-20-20 rule 

A very effective way to save our eyesight is the 20-20-20 technique. How does it work? After working for 20 minutes on your computer, make it a habit of deviating your eyesight for 20 seconds and looking at some other object that is placed about 20 feet away from your eyes. It is a unique and helpful way of protecting your eyes from damage. 

 

Practice blinking your eyes 

Blink your eyes often to reduce the chances of developing complex problems like dry eyes. Practice the habit of blinking your eyes after you have read two to three paragraphs on your computer screen. Also, use artificial tears if you feel your eyes are drying up frequently. 

 

Apart from the discussed techniques, wearing glasses with photochromatic lenses, taking frequent breaks, and adjusting computer settings as per your needs will be beneficial in safeguarding the eyes. However, there is no substitute for expert diagnosis and advice when it comes to our eye health. So, regular eye examinations combined with individual awareness will help in taking effective care of the eyes and will save our eyes from damage in the long run.
